UV laser or violet diode

Dear Flowers,
I am in the process to decide the configuration for a new Flowanalyser
and/or FlowSorter.
My general question is, how far the Violet Diode is able to substitute a
watercooled UV laser, respectively which kind of applications really
need a UV source ?
For example DakoCyt sells the Cyan optional with a UV laser or a Violet
Diode 405.
Our facility is located within a basic research area, meaning that all
kinds of "UV-related" applications could be on the task list.
Some applications are: Sidepopulation sorting, Cell-cycle, Calcium-flux
studies; Indo dyes, DAPI, etc.
How much is it dependent on the laser, and how much is it dependent on
the optics ? (I read the discussion in this forum concerning SP sorting
using the Diode Laser on the FACSAria).

Any comments are welcome
Many thanks in advance
