As you remember there was a discussion around the historical origin of the pulse height/pulse width measurement in flow cytometry to eliminate cell doublets. I just received more details from Wolfgang Gohde. This information clarifies the matter, and I want to share it with you. Indeed, Wolfgang filed patent in 1973 and presented this procedure in his dissertation (Habilitation Theses), also in 1973. He presented the method in 1975 on the Symposium on "Pulse Cytophotometry" in Munster, Germany. The method "Coincidence eliminating device for pulse-cytophotometry" was described in the publication in 1976 in "Pulse Cytophotometry II", ed. by W. Gohde et al., Medicon 71-78, Ghent, Belgium. Independently (there was no PubMed at that time and, needless to say, Wolfgang's habilitation theses, in German, were not easily accessible) Tom Sharpless, then at Sloan Kettering, developed similar idea, which he presented on one of the meetings in 1974. He published it in Acta Cytologica in 1975. Wolfgang contributed so much towards the development of flow cytometry that it is difficult to keep track of all his achievements. Unfortunately, on this side of the Atlanic Ocean, his achievements are often underestimated. Tom was one of the most creative scientists at that time. He pioneered to develop the "three-diamentional" representation of the bivariate data, that we take now for granted.
