As an addition to my comments about replies I received concerning looking at DsRed with 488nm excitation: There is a difference between different forms of DsRed. Consensus is that DsRed (or DsRed1) is weak and/or useless --- but that DsRed2 or DsRed3 are much better. The most detailed reply I received recommends DsRed Express (also called DsRed.T1) from Clontech. Again, most replies were very positive about exciting DsRed (one form or another) with a 488nm laser. Some replies mentioned doing this on a FACSCalibur. Most other replies did not specify cytometer (or indicated that it was a sorter). Alice Alice L.
