From: DR J MICHIE <JM5@sun.ac.za> To: cyto-inbox Subject: Re: ISAC 2006 location Date sent: Wed, 5 Jun 2002 10:40:35 +0200 Apart from the fact that air travel costs to the North America is very costly from South Africa, the $/Rand exchange rate makes Registartion, Accomodation and Subsistance extremely expensive for us. As an employee of one of the State Hospitals funded by the Government, there is no money available to subsidise Congress expenses (even local). So it boils down to deciding whether the large number of Rands it would take to attend Congresses overseas, which would have to be taken from Research Grant Funds for Projects, might be better spent in buying biochemicals, equipment, etc. (which also are all imported and very expensive). Having said that, I must say that the ISAC Congress that I attended in Rimini in '96 was the most stimulating and rewarding in terms of knowledge gained, of any Congress that I have attended. A lot of that stems from the willingness of people involved in flow to share ideas, knowledge, tips and advice - a phenomenon that I consider to be rather unique in the world of science. Best regards from Cape Town, on a lovely sunny and mild Winter day. John On 5 Jun 02, at 9:28, Alice L. Givan wrote: > Hello John, > I hope you have sent that note to the mailing list at large.
