printer for flow?

Our oldest member of the lab, the distinguished HP DeskJet 1200C, is going
into retirement. It has served with us for 7 years without ever being
serviced, with an average load of 80 pages a day.

HP will not service it :(

and none of the lineup DeskJet printers seem worthy of replacing this
machine.

Can anyone recommend a heavy duty color printer (non laser, academic funding
range ;) ) that will do sharp black and white as well as good color and
transparency prints?

any suggestions welcome,
