I cannot be definite without seeing the data, but it sounds that you are looking at 'doublets'; that is, two cells in G1 stuck together. They will have the same DNA content(and hence integrated area signal) as a cell in G2/M but will have a greater width. The purpose of meaasuring area and width of a DNA signal is to recognise these cells and to exclude them from the analysis. I assume that you are using a BD machine.
