I have used PI staining of ethanol fixed cells extensively after incubation conditions I know will produce either apoptosis or necrosis. I have verified the outcome with EM amongst other tests. A cell population that contains a significant proportion of necrotic cells usually shows up with a very tight G0/G1 peak. This peak often has a cv tighter than the negative control cells. This is a bit tricky as it makes the detection of "saving" of cells from apoptosis difficult to prove with this flow method. I have found several treatments that seemed to "save" cells from apoptosis (as recognised by the absence of the sub G0/G1 population) in fact led to the cell's death by necrosis.
