I would agree with the comment about cells detaching from culture dish through cell death mechanisms other than apoptosis. We recently published an interesting example of non-apoptoic drug-induced cell death causing rapid detachment of cells from a human ovarian Ca cell line. Apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death induced by cis and trans analogues of a novel ammine(cyclohexylamine)dihydrodichloroplatinum(IV) complex. C. F. O'Neill, M. G. Ormerod, D. Robertson, J. C. Titley, Y. Cumber-Waalsweer and L. R. Kelland. Brit. J. Cancer, 74, 1037-1045, 1996. The discussion emphasises the importance of: 1. Always checking cells under a microscope before drawing conclusions about apoptosis and 2. Always observing both attached and unattached cells in adherent cell cultures.
