The acronym TUNEL stays for "TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling"
(Gavrieli et al., J. Cell Biol., 119: 493, 1992). Actually, it is a
misnomer, because DNA breaks in apoptotic cells (which "TUNEL" is
labeling) are double strand breaks and not nicks. Nicks are single
strand DNA breaks.
