We have used "Rainbow Beads" (part no. RFP-30-5A) for this purpose.  They are 
useful in that a single bead is activated by many wavelengths (UV through our 
HeNe's 633), they are very bright and have moderately good CV's.  They are 
available from Spheratech, 1840 Industrial Dr., Suite 27, Livertyville, IL 
60048; telephone 1-800-368-0822 in the US.
