I would like more statistics on fees as well. I'm tired of the winers. At Case Western Reserve University, we charge $50/hour for the Profile, and $75/hour for the Elite - no charge for setup time, analysis, advice, babysitting, writing and getting Cancer Center Core or Shared Instrumentation grants, and aspirins/alcoholic beverages/phychiatric care (for us). A while back, I worked out that this was $1.38 per sample for cells run at a 1000 per second and $3.85 for cells run at a 100 per second (on the Elite) - and collecting 6250 (1000/s) or 12500 (100/s) events. This assumes that you want 5,000 good events to measure the percent postive of something or 10,000 usable events for something more complex like a DNA histogram - and that you're not talking to your girlfriend/boyfriend at the same time you're running. On the profile the price is $0.92 and 2.57 respectively. The price for all other costs for that sample if it is taken from tissue culture and stained indirectly for 1 antigen is $13.50. It seems to me that the flow cytometry is a bargain. There are a lot of estimates that go into that $13.50. It includes the principal investigator's salary and the researcher's salary and assumes that they are preparing 25,000 samples per year. If they are doing less, then obviously the price of the sample goes up. The cost of $13.50 does not include the $6.75 that should be added to the price that goes to the institution (~50%) if the sample was prepared with NIH money. The real cost then, of an NIH funded sample is ~$21.17. As an aside, not to be taken seriously - Richard, if you'll extend this price to us, up here in Cleveland, we'll subcontract our users to you!
