One way has been to resuspend cells exposed to bacteria in a solution that contains
crystal violet which will quench fluorescein; ingested fluorescein-labeled bacteria
will stil fluoresce. Citations are in older literature 1982-1984. I can dig out some
if anyone is interested

Subject: Quenching of fluorescein
We want to measure phagocytosis of fluorescein-labeled bacter-
ia. To discriminate adhering from ingested particles we would
like to quench fluorescence of extracellular bacteria.
Is there any easy means besides use of a quenching anti-flou-
rescein antibody. A protocol or relevant citation of literature
would be gratefully acknowledged.
Please send response by E-mail. Thanks a lot.
Greetings from Frankfurt, Jo Betz.
