The Population Council

Founded in 1952, the Population Council, an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, conducts research worldwide to improve policies, programs, and products in three areas: (1) HIV and AIDS; (2) poverty, gender, and youth; and (3) reproductive health. We identify problems, investigate solutions, and act on findings by working with partners around the world to expand successful programs, develop needed technologies, and help shape policy.

The Population Council’s HIV and AIDS program focuses on studying the immunology of HIV infection, developing and expanding access to HIV-prevention technologies, finding ways to protect people most vulnerable to HIV infection, and working to eliminate child deaths from HIV.

The Population Council’s Poverty, Gender, and Youth program increases knowledge about vulnerable populations, refines and shares research tools, and expands educational opportunities for young women.

The Population Council’s Reproductive Health program develops needed technologies and pharmaceuticals and manages clinical trials of contraceptives and hormone therapies for women and men. Staff members seek ways to increase access to and improve the quality of reproductive health services, develop new models for improving care, and assist in the expansion of successful innovations.
