International travel for US government employees For US government employees ( USEPA) there is more scrutiny to go on a European trip. One must fill our purpose, justification, and benefit to the agency. Someone can approve or disapprove the trip based on this information. Approval must be obtained from Washington prior to departure One must return to USA immediately after the meeting. One day vacation , one day recovery time can be taken. NO MORE!! (the perception is that the scientists are going overseas to have a vacation and not to work and communicate) Since it is more costly in regard to transportation ( NO cheap government fares) it is usually discouraged by the administration ( i.e. it costs $309 to go to San Diego and $600 to go to Quebec City from Raleigh- Durham). Travel budgets consists of primarily airfare and this source of money is usually limited. The more spent on international travel the less money that is available for other domestic trips for the division. Hope this helps--It is another view --somewhat different than the University view. My understanding of the issues is that accommodation rates elsewhere were very high - Canada was attractively inexpensive..... best wishes paul On 28 May 2002, at 12:03, Julie Auger wrote: Colleagues - It was announced at ISAC XXI that the ISAC congress scheduled for 2006 may be held in Canada. I am sure that this is a great location, but I am concerned that many members of ISAC have trouble securing funding for international travel to meetings outside of the US. If so, you will not be able to attend another ISAC congress until 2008. If you feel this is a concern for you, please email an ISAC officer or council member as soon as possible.
