The Clinical Flow Cytometry Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital has an
opening for a half-time flow cytometry technician. The downtown Boston lab is
equipped with a 4 color B-D FACSCalibur with all options, and FACScan.
Interested and enthusiastic recent university graduates considering a
biomedical career are encouraged to apply, as are those with previous
cytometry
experience. Evening and/or occasional weekend work will be required.

The technologist is involved in processing a variety of specimens from
patients
with leukemia, lymphoma, and congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies. The
variety of specimens that come to the lab are astounding and always
interesting. These specimens are obtained from lymph node, bone marrow, fine
needle aspirate, blood, vitreous & cerebral spinal fluids. The candidates
duties include specimen pick-up, preparation and analysis on the flow
cytometer. The technologist works directly under the guidance of the senior
medical technologist and lab director in choosing and following an appropriate
monoclonal antibody panel and test for each case. Interaction with the primary
medical staff is encouraged. The Clinical Lab is in downtown Boston at MGH,
and directly associated with the lab directors cell sorting /research lab in
Charlestown Navy Yard.

Universal safety precautions are followed in handling all specimens due to
their potentially hazardous nature. The technologist also performs T cell
subsetting and stem cell analyses. Other duties include operation and
maintenance of other laboratory equipment. Additionally, the technologist may
participate in teaching and training of pathology residents and fellows in
flow
cytometry techniques.

Qualifications: USA Citizenship. Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology or
Chemistry or equivalent. Cytometry, immunology and computer science
familiarity desired.
