"Bad " presentation of the cytometry data.

Dear "Friends in Cytometry",

Notice that I am not using the term "Flowers". Judging from diversity of
the topics discussed on this forum, I presume that there are many "non-flow
cytometrists" among us, including the colleagues that use image analysis,
confocal cytometry, static cytometry (LSC), genomics, proteomics, etc. Thus,
the name "Flowers" appears not inclusive enough anymore.

I apoplogize that I did not personally replied to everyone who responded to
my message regarding the need for the Instructions on how to optimally
present the cytometric data. I never had such an avalanche of responses -
this was the reason why it was difficult to answer each of them
individually. Nearly all responders were applauding the idea. Several were
offering help. Most responders also supported the idea that the developing
document should be presented for discussion on this forum (Purdue Cytometry
Board). We [Harry Crissman, Paul Robinson, Chuck Goolsby, Jim Jett (who
volunteered to help) and I] are already communicating how to approach this
project. At the forthcominbg Clinical Cytometry Meeting in Orlando (Nov.
11-13) Chuck will formally approach members of European Working Group to
delegate colleagues from outside of the US to join in the project.

We envisage that two documents will evolve. The "extended" one will present,
in detail, the most common inappropriate ("bad") data, discuss why they are
inapropriate, and demonstrate correct data presentation. I believe there
also will be room for discussing not only data presentation but also
incorrect data interpretation, that is also quite common in the
literature..We will approach many of you, from the fields of cell cycle,
apoptosis, immunology, clinical cytometry/oncology, etc, to consult and
participate. This document may be then published in Cytometry. However, if
published, we will attempt to waive the Publisher's copyright to it, so it
can be widely available to everybody, including its on-line access by
internet.
The second document will be the condensed version, a two-page flier, that
can be included as part of the "Authors' Instructions". In this flier, the
link will be shown to the "extended" form. We intent to send the condensed
form to the Editors of the journals that publish cytometry data, asking them
to include it in their instruction manuals. I am certain that many of them
will respond positively - each Editor obviously desires that his/her journal
publishes the data correctly presented.

Please forward me further your comments, especially specific
suggestions/ideas that may be related to this project. All will read,
discussed and considered.
