Dr. Christiansen inquired about choice of a simple method to assess early
and late apoptosis.

We have now good experience with the FLICA assay that detects activation of
caspases (See Smolewski et al., Cytometry, 44: 73-82, 2001). The major
advantage of FLICA is that these reagents also can be used to arrest the
process of apoptosis and therefore allow one to assess cumulative apoptotic
index (Smolewski et al., Stathmo-apoptosis: arresting apoptosis by
fluorochrome-labeled inhibitor of caspases. Int. J. Oncology,
19:657-663,2001). Thus, both, early and late apoptotic cells can be detected
at the same time.
