specific staining of RNA

Richard Haugland and Howard Shapiro state correctly that there is no
fluorochrome that specifically stains RNA. The specific staining of RNA,
however, can be achieved immunocytochemically. Incubation of cells with BrU
labels specifally only RNA. Some antibodies against BrdU crossreact with BrU
- the one that does it is provided by Phoenix Flow System. This method,
first described by Jensen et al., (Cytometry, 14;455-58,1993; see recent
protocol by these authors in Current Protocols in Cytometry) provides indeed
very specific RNA labeling.
I am attaching our recent paper demonstrating the use of this method to
follow RNA segregation during apoptosis
