Protein staining

Dear Wolfgang,
we established recently a protocol for staining bacteria with the
protein dye SyPRO red from Molecular Probes. We had good reproducible
results, it is easy in its handling and - it is quantitative (Zubkov et
al, Appl. Envir. Microbiol. 1999, 65:3251-3257)! I don't know if SyPRO
red is applicable to autofluorescent phytoplankton (I assume not), but
there are several colors now towards green. Perhaps you can try one, it
should in principle work like the red dye.
Hope that helps you
All the best
Bernhard
