I would love to hear how the red diode laser performs compared to a HeNe. Have you
tried the Violet diodes?

And I just got a 25 mW 635 nm diode system with a circular beam from Power
Technology; I haven't had a chance to test it extensively but I've had
pretty good luck with their lower power circular beam systems, and the 25
mW has a thermoelectric cooler (same package they use for the violet
diodes), which should minimize mode hop noise. The system was under $2,000.
