Just a historical note. I believe the old Ortho CytoFluorografs used a design like that. They used long working distance 20 or 40X objectives in their later designs. They used these objectives for their light gathering power to increase sensitivity, or at least, so I was told. They used their standard flowcells for these applications. 2) Ortho doesn't sell these anymore. (I miss my old Cytofluorograf.) I don't know if this answers your question, but I hope it helps.
