The Immunology section provides immunologic diagnostic procedures on inpatients and outpatients of the Clinical Center. The service also collaborates in clinical research of a fundamental and methodological nature to improve patient care service and basic knowledge in immunology. The Immunology Service is actively involved in clinical research utilizing flow cytometry as a tool to evaluate lymphocytes, lymphocyte subsets, monocytes, granulocytes and eosinophils. The incumbent must understand cell trafficking patterns in a variety of disease states as well as in specialized treatment approaches to certain diseases. The incumbent of this position works independently with a minimum of supervision to develop new tests and to organize and carry out research projects as directed by the Chief of Immunology. In particular, autoimmune diseases. Assists in teaching of post doctorate fellows (physicians), other technologists, and scientists who come to the Immunology Department specifically for training in flow cytometry. Basic Qualification Requirements: For Medical Technologist, GS-644: A degree in medical technology, chemistry or biology that included at least 16 semester hours of biological science, including one course in microbiology and immunology, and 16 semester hours of chemistry including one course in organic or biochemistry, and 3 semester hours of college mathematics OR a full 4-year course of study that included at least 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or an accredited medical technology school OR a combination of at least 35 semester hours of biological science, chemistry and mathematics as described above and additional appropriate education and/or experience totaling 4 years. Combinations of education and experience are acceptable as defined by the OPM Qualification Standards Handbook. IN ADDITION: FOR THE GS-9: Candidates must have 2 years of progressively higer level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Government. FOR THE GS-11: Candidates must meet ONE of the following specific minimal education requirements: A) 16 credits in biology including a class in microbiology and in immunology, 16 credits in chemistry including a class in either organic chemistry or biochemistry, and 3 credits in college math; B) a full 4-year course of study that was supplemented by at least 12 months in a college or hospital based medical technology program; or C) at least 35 credits of biological science, chemistry, and mathematics as described in "A" above and additional appropriate education and/or experience totaling 4 years. Additionally, candidates must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level, or a master's degree directly applicable to the position plus experience. Equivalent combinations of education and specialized experience is qualifying for the GS-11.
