DNA Proliferation Index

Hi DNA experts,

A recent article on growth of pterygium on the eye ( Investigative Ophthalmology and
Visual Science, June 2000, by Donald Tiang-Hwee Tan) uses a mean proliferation index
to evaluate the proliferative status of conjunctival epithelium versus conjunctival
fibrovascular tissue. The calculation that is used is new to me and I was wondering
if other experts in the field have tried this. The test data is from using Cellfit
software (version 2.0) DNA software. The MPI defined in the paper is as follows:
MPI= (S+ G2/M) to (S+G2/M+GO+G1).

Is this a valid index of proliferation? If it is, I would appreciate any references
you may have.
