At the last Board meeting, FASTS asked me to collate any data that may be available which shows the benefits of investing in/funding basic research in terms of innovations that have arisen from such research which have a direct economic benefit. This would be a similar exercise to that used by FASEB for their successful lobbying of the Clinton administration for increasing funds to biological sciences. This data could be from overseas or from Australia. The aim is to have it ready by Science Meets Parliament Day - when a large delegation of scientists meets MPs for specific discussions on the importance of funding basic science. Please send the data to me at this email address (p.french@cfi.unsw.edu.au). Please pass this request on to your colleagues. If you would like more info on FASTS, see their web site: www.usyd.edu.au/fasts/ Peter French
