Anne, Don't know for sure if this will help but when I was running the lab in Oman I used the ReticOne dye from Coulter which uses a metachromatic dye (Chlorophosphine O - I think), staining both DNA and RNA but fluorescing different colours. It's designed for use on the XL and, if memory serves correct, is set up on FL1 & FL3. I did run some P Falciparum infected RBC's on it and had some slight indication that they could be seen but the parasitaemias were very low so I couldn't be sure and in any case the supplied protocol is obviously designed purely for Retics. A little tinkering with your own protocol might just do it. If any of my old colleagues at Beckman-Coulter are monitoring the list maybe they can help !
