I was ostracized several months ago by a "leading expert" in the field of flow
for asking some "beginner questions". He essentially was acting like an
academic bully and he seemed to take further offense when I wouldn

't back down
to his initial comments. However, I also received plenty of support and insight
from other individuals. Hopefully in the future we [flow beginners] can be
received with more of a welcome from the "experts". Happy Holidays everyone!
Matt.

Well, it is certainly true that many "individuals
who are hired/assigned/want to use flow cytometers have no or inadequate
training."
I was like that myself 16 years ago (and even now I often ask stupid questions).
I think
we should be encouraging beginners to use this network as a way to get started.
I don't
see any problem with beginners asking us naive or even stupid questions --- and
I am
perfectly willing to point them to references that may help them to get into the
field.
I think this network can be broad enough to answer simple questions from
beginners
and also sophisticated questions from experts. No problem, as far as I'm
concerned.
