annexin V and PI positive cells

The cells that are both annexin V and PI positive are either the cell that
died by mode of necrosis or at late stage  ("necrotic phase") of apoptosis.
The ability of plasma membrane to exclude cationic dyes such as PI is
progressively lost during apoptosis. The objects that are annexin V negative
but PI positive most often are lysed cells that lost most of their plasma
membrane, isolated nuclei or nuclear fragments..
