DAPI as dead cell discriminator

I'm a little puzzled by the discussions about using DAPI as a dead cell
discriminating dye.  I was under the impression that DAPI passes intact
membranes.  In fact, Molecular Probes technical support confirmed that DAPI is
not a suitable substitute for PI, 7AAD, etc as a dead cell discriminator.  What
gives?
