Indeed.  To contribute an eye-catcher I took the liberty to attach an
illustration: the signal of a single particle (chain-forming phytoplankton
colony of about 240 micrometers in length) flowing through the 5 micrometer
laser beam in our 'flow phytometer'. Green = forward scatter; red =
auto-fluorescence; blue = side scatter.

We digitize all preamp outputs at 4MHz, and store that as raw data to do
various kinds of analysis (including signal integration). The large
particle shown represents roughly 2 kbyte data - but these are relatively
less abundant in natural waters - normally we have about 100 kbyte/1000
particles.
