Unfortunately not far enough in the past.......

 From the Coherent 599 manual:
=====================================================
1. Pour 750ml ethylene glycol into a clean container.

2. Dissolve 1 gram of R6G in 50ml of reagent grade
    methanol, add to the ethylene glycol, pour into the
    dye reservoir.

3. Dissolve 2 grams of R6G in 100ml of methanol.
    After laser is lasing, add small amounts at a time
    to optimise the power output. Normally, a total of
    2-3 grams of dye is required in the solution for
    optimum performance.
    Note that one to two minutes are required for the
    dye concentration to become uniform.

4. Add COT if desired.....
======================================================

I just do steps 1 and 2, I've found that step 3 does
not make a lot of difference.
I've never dared to muck about with COT....

Averaging about 6 hours a day the dye mixture lives
for about 6 months; gradual loss of power, then a
rapid drop-off when the stuff looks really brown.

Cheers, Joseph.
