Dear Bassem,

we published a paper a few years ago on epithelial cell dissociation
from human intestinal biopsies. You can find the paper in :

J. Immunol. Methods 158: 207-214 (1993). Authors: L. Madrigal et
al.

We used a combination of DDT (a reducing, mucolitic agent) and EDTA
(a chelating agent that, by sequestering divalent ions, releases the
epithelial cells). Several methods described for epithelial cell detachment
in mice, rats and humans use a combination of these agents. In our hands,
only epithelial layer was released, leaving intact the basement membrane
and other cell layers. I don't know if it'll be useful for shellfish gills,
but I imagine it would be worth your while trying.

Best of luck,

Laura
