Jeff, My guess would be that this is a memory problem. Word is designed to handle text principally and graphics as an afterthought. Consequently each document probably has a limited memory allowed for graphics and the remainder defaults to text. When the memory allocation assigned to graphics is overloaded the program probably closes down the graphics allotment to enable the text to survive - hence the red 'x'. I would try breaking up your one huge document into multiple smaller documents to restore the memory allocation. Gene/UCONN Health
