In HIV patients inversion in CD4/CD8 ratio (when it becomes lower than 1 ie CD8>CD4) is used in our lab to asses well-being of patients. Also important is the naive/memory populations of each subset. There are many described ways to asses those, ranging from CD45RA/RO vs. CD4/8, adding CD62L etc, and even CD8/57.
