Colleagues:

If you have any interest at all in SCIENCE EDUCATION (read
cytometry education as well here) and TRAINING at all levels, read
on. If not skip this message. This is a long message, but it's
important.

For many years I have tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to expand
ISAC's interest in sponsoring EDUCATION related activities at
Society congresses.

At the ISAC 2000 congress I will run a SPECIAL WORKSHOP and I
hope that so many of you attend that it will drive our society into
being a proactive society on education issues.

I encourage you to submit an ABSTRACT before NEXT
SATURDAY 14 NOV and IDENTIFY IT

under the SECTION: OTHER - "EDUCATION".

Now, I know this topic does not exist - in fact it never has and I tried
members of the organization set the standards and I personally
will be highlighted in <color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param>a special workshop on Monday evening
Monday, 22 May at 14:00-16:00 Entitled "Science Education:
Linking Students at all Levels"<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param>. (I am trying to find some
companies to help sponsor the workshop as well - for example I
would really like to be able to invite an outstanding person who has
spent 7 years in both NSF and NIH to participate, but I need some
sponsorship for this.....)

In addition, I intend to write a special article for CYTOMETRY on
include as many references to the abstracts submitted as possible.
Further, I will be creating a new section on our Purdue website on
CYTOMETRY EDUCATION and I hope to draw attention to the many
issues that currently affect us. Most of you have at least seen, if not
used one of the 5 CD-ROMs we have already produced, and you all
participate in this discussion group which is pure education!

During the workshop we will discuss:

1. How to get <color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param>$$$<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param> for your education efforts

2. What granting agencies have the most money!!

3. Grant writing tips and suggestions how to get some of that
money!!

4. How to best be involved in education as a scientist, student, and
staff of cytometry and image facilities

5. Training and education of staff, undergraduates and graduates

7. Where are the training workshops and how useful are they?

6. Elementary and high school opportunities - where?

7. How do you successfully link with schools?

8. Bringing school kids into the lab - how to survive the experience!!!

9. How to make the VP take note of your facility - use the "K-12"
word!

funding sources, the evaluation process, how evaluation and
assessment are key words in education grants. How to pronounce
"pedagogical"..... and how it impacts how your grant is viewed and
reviewed.

<color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param>NEW OPPORTUNITIES<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param>

We will also demonstrate the first couple of CD-ROMs developed
under the BioScope Initiative - a high school materials development
program which the NSF funded for $2 million at Purdue. <color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param>BioScope
is BASED on CYTOMETRY education principles<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param>!! Opportunities
for scientific contributions will be made available. How can you
participate? New programs coming from our laboratory such as the
RemoteScope Program, and the VIP (Virtual Interactive Partnership
program) which will impact hundreds of thousands and possibly
millions of school kids will be discussed also.

Graduate and continuing education will be discussed and I hope to
be able to discuss a new proposal I am developing for sharing flow
cytometry and image cytometry teaching and tutorial materials
(lecture notes, slides, animations, videos, sample data, etc).

Education is hardly mentioned in our society - it's too important to
be ignored, I think it is time we did something SERIOUS about that.
<color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param>I encourage you to submit a poster under the section OTHER -
EDUCATION.<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param>

I guarantee that this will be an exciting workshop. <color><param>7F00,0000,0000</param> My goal in life is
never do anything that is boring,<color><param>0000,0000,0000</param> - and if I do, only do it once!
This will not be one of those occasions. I will try my hardest to get a
significant package of material for every participant of the workshop
 as well.

I'd appreciate an email from you if you would like to attend or
participate in this workshop. To make it successful, I suspect that we
need to have lots of abstracts. Submit an abstract covering your
educational participation - elementary, junior high, high school,
undergraduate, graduate, continuing ed, - failures and successes..

Example of Posters I will be submitting to ISAC 2000: Section:
OTHER - EDUCATION (write this in the <underline> !</underline>)
