For what is is worth, you can see cleanly resolved populations of live and dead E. coli by forward and side scatter on the Bryte HS. Unfortunately, Bio-Rad has stopped making the Bryte. Paul Robinson's lab has one. Maybe they'd be willing to entertain offers...
