Cell cycle analysis

I'm very much new to the flow world and have a very elementary question
about cell cycle analysis using PI. In Grogan and Collins' "Guide to Flow
Cytometry" they have a figure showing the transition of peaks fromG1 to G2M
in a synchronised HeLa cell culture. The transition is very smooth with the
G1 peak moving over to "become" the G2M peak which then diminishes as the
G1 peak reestablishes itself. What I want to know is, does this really
happen or is it just an idealised figure? Some previous work my lab did in
collaboration with a different group produced data for synchronised cells
in which the G1 peak maintained while the G2M peak developed, there being
no loss in the G1 peak. I'm going to be repeating this experiment and would
be interested in finding out which data set should expect.
