Dear Ted, We have a FACStar Plus upgraded as yours and two Vantage SE systems with TurboSort at Scripps. So, it is easy for us to compare what TSO does and what the SE electronics do to complement TSO. One huge improvement over the older system is the 1/10 drop clock, allowing the 'pure sort' circuits to have a more precise handle on the events in time. This will allow you to tune the system for better efficiency and reduce the drop deflection envelope - so your yields will go up with a well tuned system (using a 1.4 -> 1.5 drop deflection envelope). In multi-laser mode, the SE will surpass the modified Plus at most any speed because of the digital electronics. Still, you ought to be able to see a significant increase over the previous electronics in terms of recovery (where the older circuits could lose much more than expected due to hidden dead-times). So, for hi-speed sorting in your modified system, you should try to keep critical sorts single laser for maximum recovery. If you need to do multi-laser sorts, you should slow down a little if recovery becomes the main issue. The range of frequencies and rates we use vary all over the place depending on the task at hand, so I think that goes beyond a response here. Please feel free to contact us if you want detailed setup parameters we tend to use on our 'Plus with TSO.
