Just a follow-up to John Altman's comment - indeed, one cannot assume that the subset of IFN-g producers with in a CD8 population and the subset of CTL are one in the same. However, there is a way to assess lytic potential by flow cytometry: intracellular perforin expression. Refer to a recent article in Science for an example of this approach [Science 283:1745 (1999)].
