Doublet discrimination

...is ONLY possible with any degree of certainty if the cross section of
the interrogating beam is less than that of the particles being
interrogated. 40 micron beams or worse ("defocussed to aid in sorting" -
ugh!), needless to say, are less than optimal for this purpose (speaking
tactfully).
