Here are some of the earlier references dealing with FITC quenching by
trypan blue.

J Immunological Methods, 60 (1983) 115-124. Differentiation between
attached and ingested immune complexes by a fluorescence quenching
cytofluorometric assay.

J Immunological Methods, 72 (1984) 229-241.  Flow cytometric assay for
combined measurement of phagocytosis and intracellular killing of
C.albicans

J Immunological Methods, 101 (1987) 119-125.  The use of fluorescence
quenching in flow cytofluorometry to measure the attachment and
ingestion phases in phagocytosis in peripheral blood without prior cell
separation.
