Matthias Haury: Indeed, the Alexa 488 is brighter than fluorescein in several applications. Here at Molecular Probes, we have compared by flow cytometry, the staining of cell surface receptors with several green fluorescent dyes and Alexa 488 was the brightest. This data will be included in a poster at the next Cell Biology meeting in Washington D.C., Poster Board # A-657. If you have a specific application for which the Alexa 488 would be suitable, I would be happy to provide you additional information.
