first use of PI for viability

A historical question.

Can anyone provide me with the earliest reference to the use of PI or EB as
a viability probe? 

Howard does not mention this in his book and in the 3M book a reference to
Krishan in 1975 is given, but this study seems to deal with cell cycle
analysis of fixed cells.
