Gel microdrop encapsulation has been used to stabilize chromosomes for in
situ hybridization and flow cytometric analysis. This may also help to
stabilize fragile cells for cell sorting. Actually, this has been
suggested in several other microdrop papers. The chromosome paper is:
In Situ Hybridization to Chromosomes Stabilized in Gel Microdrops.
Cytometry 21:111-119(1995) by Nguyen, et al. We have encapsulated,
surface labelled and sorted encapsulated cells in our lab. There are a
number of papers describing the technique. You may email me directly if
you would like further references or tips.
