European Working Group on
Clinical Cell Analysis (EWGCCA)

Collaboration in the European Community

EU Concerted Action BMH4-CT97-2611(DG12-SSMI)

1. Purpose:

The European Working Group for Clinical Cell Analysis (EWGCCA) was founded in January 1996 in Regensburg, Germany. It had its first regular meeting on July 4, 1996 in Antwerp, Belgium. The speaker of the group is G.Schmitz, Regensburg, Germany with J.Gratama, Rotterdam as treasurer.

The objectives of the group are the advancement and standardization of clinical cell analysis in the European Community. The Working Group promotes the collaboration of various scientific disciplines and societies in this field without the intention to establish a formal scientific society.

2. Membership:

The members of the working group (WM) elect active members (AM) and industrial members (IM).

3. Task Forces:

WM, AM and IM form task forces for specific issues in the field of clinical cell analysis. The following task forces for clinical cytometry have been established:

I. Technical Task Forces:
1. Flow cytometer set-up and calibration (see Concepts in Clinical Cytometry)
Boussu, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Warsaw

2. Sample preparation for multicolor flow cytometry
Aarau, Salamanca, Urbino

3. Absolute cell count assessment
Milano, London, Paris, Stockholm

4. Detection of intracellular antigens
Rotterdam, Athens, Debrecen, London, Paris, Regensburg, Salamanca, Urbino

5. Quantitation of antigen expression
Stockholm, Athens, Boussu, Regensburg

6. Cytometric data analysis (see Concepts in Clinical Cytometry)
Martinsried, Regensburg, Rotterdam

II. Clinical Task Forces
7. Lymphocyte subset enumeration and function assays
London, Boussu, Paris, Regensburg, Stockholm, Urbino

8. Platelet Immunophenotyping and function assays (see Concepts in Clinical Cytometry)
Regensburg, Debrecen, Stockholm, Warsaw

9. Leukemia and lymphoma Immunophenotyping (see Leukemias and Lymphoma Classification)
Salamanca, Athens, Martinsried, Paris, Warsaw

10. CD34+ stem cell enumeration
Urbino, Aarau, Herlev, London, Milano, Rotterdam

4. Consensus Reports:

Consensus protocols for the:
- Immunophenotyping of Hematopoietic Malignancies (see Leukemia 10,877-895(1996))
- Immunophenotyping of platelet dysfunctions (see Concepts in Clinical Cytometry)
- Immunophenotyping of broncheo-alveolar lavage (BAL) samples
- Dual parameter DNA/antibody flow cytometry
have either been elaborated or are currently under work.
