Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) Imaging
- Uses a special filter that passes two beams of polarized light across or through a specimen. The pathlength of one of the beams is slightly altered. The joining of the two beams creates a shadow that emphasizes the three-dimensional nature of the cell. This can be used to see some cell organelles (for example, the nuclei and mitochondria in this image).
