Data Analysis in Flow Cytometry

A Dynamic Approach

By Michael G. Ormerod

A CD ROM Based Teaching Tool

Notes from the Author

This CD ROM is designed to run under Windows on an IBM-PC compatible computer which is equipped with a mouse.

This book takes you on a tour through the different applications of flow cytometry to mammalian biology. Rather than give you a lot of text to read illustrated with static pictures, raw data are supplied so that you can experiment dynamically with the data for yourself.

The text on the CD ROM is brief but it is accompanied by copious files of listed data. The major features of the analysis of data from each application are outlined and guidance is given about how to proceed. You are then free to experiment with the analysis for yourself. Some of the pitfalls are also described and, for a few applications, files of misrecorded data have been included to illustrate these pitfalls.

I have only given enough details of the methods of cell preparation to give an understanding of the data. Three good 'methods' books have recently been published (Robinson, 1993; Darzynkiewicz et al., 1994 and Ormerod, 1994b). For each application, I give an appropriate reference to a chapter in one of these books. I have included details of the flow cytometer used to record the data. I have also given a few key references to each application to give you a starting point for exploring the literature.

A program for data analysis is included on the CD-ROM. This is the WINMDI program written by Dr. Joe Trotter, Scripps Research Institute.
