Gly-phe-gly-ala-Rho110 was found to be a substrate for the collagenase group of proteolytic enzymes in a screen of several tetrapeptide derivatives. Collagenases are enzymes that digest the collagens, macromolecules that form highly organized structures in connective tissue and extracellular matrix. The collagenases are Zn2+ dependent metalloenzymes that are synthesized in a pro-enzyme inactive form. The production of HOCl during the neutrophil oxidative burst has been postulated as one mechanism for collagenase activation in vivo. Studies have shown that collagenases may play a role in the degradation of the extracellular matrix during cell migration.
