The conversion of nonfluorescent dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) to the highly fluorescent compound 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF) can be used to monitor the oxidative burst in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The enzymes responsible for the oxidative burst are rapidly activated in stimulated neutrophils. DCFH,PMA¨Oxidative Burst contains the compound phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), an analogue of the cellular signaling molecule diacylglycerol (DAG). Therefore, the presence of PMA stimulates processes mediated by DAG, including the oxidative burst.
