Derivatives of the tetrapeptide ala-ala-pro-val have been shown to be substrates for the closely related enzymes leukocyte elastase (neutrophil elastase) and pancreatic elastase. Elastases are defined by their ability to cleave elastin, the matrix protein that gives tissues the property of elasticity. Human leukocyte elastase, a serine protease and major component of neutrophil granules, is essential for phagocytosis and defense against infection by invading microorganisms.
Alternative enzyme nomenclature: leukocyte elastase: neutrophil elastase, EC 3.4.21.37, pancreatic elastase: EC 3.4.21.36
