TIA-1 is a 15 kDa cytoplasmic granule associated protein found in lymphocytes possessing cytolytic potential. Although TIA-1 recognizes a 15 kDa protein in unstimulated T lymphocytes. Activated T lymphocytes are induced to express several higher molecular weight proteins that are also recognized by TIA-1. TIA-1 antigen is expressed in most CD8+ peripheral T lymphocytes and in a minor population of CD4+ peripheral T lymphocytes. It is also expressed in CD4+ and CD8+ activated T cell Clones and in activated natural killer cell Clones. It is not found on B lymphocytes or B cell lines. TIA-1 antibody detects cytolytic effector cells in lymphocytic infiltrates. It is suitable for flow cytometric analysis of permeabilized cells, immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry both on frozen and on paraffin-embedded tissue sections. TIA-1 antibody was evaluated during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
